Sleep? How much do we really need?

I’ve often wondered howSleep much sleep we REALLY need. Scientists are always saying that we need at least 7-8 hours sleep per night to be able to function properly and be healthy, they say if we don’t get the optimum amount of sleep it can lead to heart problems/other health issues later in life, the same goes whether you have too much sleep or too little sleep. But is this really true? Some people claim they can function fine with just 2-4 hours sleep per night. I used to be able to do just fine on around 4 hours sleep per night, but then the holidays came and I got into a routine of staying awake until gone 3am and then getting up at around 11am every morning. Now that I’m back to college I’m having trouble adapting to the early morning starts whereas before, I used to get up extra early just so I could catch a bit of TV in the morning.

Its clear that we need sleep so that we can rest our bodies from the days work, I’d say rest our minds but our minds are just if not more active during periods of sleep (REM Sleep) than they are during the day, the brain uses this time to store away information, and repair the body ready for another days hard work.

I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t really matter HOW many hours sleep you get, as long as you’re going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, this consistency allows your body to develop your sleeping pattern so you get the right amounts of REM sleep.  So for those of you who don’t like sleeping and find it a waste of time (very few I expect) as long as you go to bed around the same time and get up around the same time, you should do perfectly well sleeping just 2-4 hours a night. Although you might want to throw in a couple of power naps (15-20 minutes) during the day if you can to make sure you catch up on some lost sleep.

If you’re having trouble staying awake during the day then take a walk, getting the heart flowing around your body is a quick fire way of waking yourself up, along with a healthy diet and good exercise routine.

I have wondered how much sleep we really need, but myself i work fine on 5-6 hours sleep each night and can work on between 3-4 hours sleep with no problems so i dont see why we need between 7-8 hours sleep and as you say your mind is working all the time so it doesnt make a lot of difference how much sleep you get. The way i see it as long as you feel you have had enough sleep i dont see why we need advice and dont really need to listen to it.
    Thanks Hurricane Buckley.
